Who This Checklist Is For
If you're a procurement engineer, shop manager, or DIY rebuilder who's tired of getting burned by inconsistent automotive parts, this is for you. Step 3: Inspect Packaging and Storage Conditions
I have mixed feelings about excessive packaging. On one hand, it wastes material. On the other, I've seen the damage from under-packaging. We had a shipment of 150 differential ring-and-pinion sets that arrived in plastic bags, tossed loose in a cardboard box. About 30% had nicked gear teeth. - Assuming 'OEM equivalent' means identical. It doesn't. Verify tolerances yourself.
- Ignoring the spec sheet. We once had a customer ask 'is radiator fluid the same as coolant?' — yes they are the same thing, but that confusion cost them a mis-specified coolant pump. Read the manual.
- Trusting the first batch blindly. We had a vendor deliver 10 perfect samples, then the production run of 200 had different material hardness. Insist on batch-level testing.
- Skipping the storage condition check. As I mentioned, rust can turn a good part into scrap in months. Store them properly or demand climate-controlled storage from your supplier.
